Team Jornaya & Family Members Give Back on MLK Day of Service

Each year, on the third Monday in January, the MLK Day of Service is observed as a “day on, not a day off.” MLK Day of Service is intended to empower individuals, strengthen communities, bridge barriers, create solutions to social problems, and move us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a “Beloved Community.”

As part of Jornaya’s philanthropic efforts, our team members and their families kicked company-wide inaugural participation in a Day of Service on January 20, 2020. It is not lost on us that there are others in our communities that have not been as fortunate as many of us, and therefore when there is something we can do to help, we feel a responsibility to do so.

We partnered with the Philadelphia nonprofit ACHIEVEability for our day of service. The organization is working to permanently break the generational cycle of poverty for low-income single-parent families who are either homeless or on the verge of homelessness in West Philadelphia. Through hands-on mentorship, participants are provided with higher education, affordable housing, supportive services, community and economic development, and accountability. Participants leave the program with a college degree and the life skills needed to be fully self-sufficient, enabling them to live fulfilling lives and provide a supportive home environment for their children.

Jornaya volunteers painted two homes for the organization’s Family Self-Sufficiency Program.
